Windy, Sh**ty: Bush Worship by the Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times's Editorial Boards, Issue 1

Thu Apr 15, 2004 at 08:29:53 AM PDT

The first installment of what could be a daily feature (the source material is endless) comes from an editorial in today's Chicago Tribune:

"Even though he fumbled an answer to another "gotcha" question--he couldn't name his "biggest mistake" since Sept. 11--what the American people saw at the podium in the East Room of the White House on Tuesday night was not a politician who claims to be infallible. What they saw was a president of strong beliefs who sticks to his convictions. They saw a president who believes in the noble goal of a free and peaceful Iraq, and a reshaped Middle East. They saw a president not willing to give an inch to terrorists. No apology necessary."  full editorial here, free registration required

Usually I'm not worked up quite enough to write a letter to the editor (sometimes I'm so apoplectic after reading the latest editorial paean, I can't string two words together, let alone a whole letter)...but today it just flowed.  Since I know the Tribune won't publish it, please allow me to print it here:

Although the Tribune editorial board lauds President Bush for being a "president of strong beliefs who sticks to his convictions," clinging to discredited ideas in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary is not a sign of strength--it is a symptom of tunnel vision and pigheadedness.  No doubt you feel the need to bolster the currently flimsy case for a second Bush term in advance of your inevitable endorsement, but could you please try to be a little less obsequious when licking the administration's boots?  A newspaper is supposed to impart knowledge, not nausea.

This series will continue soon--no doubt another Bush-adoring editorial is just around the corner here in the Windy City.
